Paris, 1963, a city where the scent of freshly baked croissants mingles with the hum of history. In a sun-dappled apartment on a quiet side street, Roland, the youngest of six children, lies in his crib, his tiny fingers twitching as if reaching for something just out of reach. The doctors have spoken—their words like cold rain: "He’ll never walk. A life confined to a wheelchair, perhaps even a bed." But Esther, Roland’s mother, has always been a woman who defied such pronouncements. With fiery eyes and a will as strong as the Seine’s current, she refused to let the diagnosis dictate her son’s fate. "He’s not broken," she’d insist, adjusting the blanket around Roland’s small frame, "He’s just taking his time learning how to move." Neighbors whispered of her stubbornness, of how she’d spend hours propping Roland up, guiding his legs through exercises, his tiny feet thudding against the floor with determined little taps. Even when the doctors returned with more dire warnings, Esther countered with a fierce smile, "Watch me prove you wrong." For Roland, though, the world was a blur of faces and voices, his body a puzzle he couldn’t quite solve. But Esther’s love was a lifeline—a warm, unyielding force that refused to let despair take root.
